Masashi Ebinuma, Japan’s triple World Champion at under 66 kilograms, is one of judo’s greatest ever throwers. His incredible range of techniques is best reflected in his three World finals. He won each one with Ippon, and each one with a different technique. His first one was Uchi-mata; a technique he has used throughout his entire competitive career. Ebinuma’s Uchi-mata is the perfect accessory to his incredibly effective O-uchi-gari. It relies on a huge amount of rotation, which is largely generated by the arms. He has two main variations, the second of which is initiated from his O-uchi-gari entry. Ebinuma’s ability in O-uchi-gari is what makes his Uchi-mata.
