Tandoku renshu is translated as independent practice. Also known as ‘shadow uchi-komi’, It’s a unique and useful tool to have in your Judo armoury, as you can work alone, without a partner.
Tandoku renshu can be used for warming up, or for coaches to check posture and technique. It is particularly useful for beginners, although many Judoka use it throughout their careers.
Kanamaru says that Triple Olympic Champion, Tadihiro Nomura, highly valued tandoku renshu, using it regularly to maintain his technical level.
Each repetition must be meaningful, and performed with moderate to high intensity, so the technique will be effective against when you do use it against a partner. Foot positioning, posture and balance are of the utmost importance. Complete control of your body is required throughout.
