Here is Ugo Legrand’s Kouchi Gari. This attack all comes off of his Kosoto twitch. The twitch is used to make Uke move into a position that allows Legrand to attack with his Kouchi Gari.
This attack bears many similarities to Daniel Fernandez’s Kouchi, as it was Fernandez who taught it to Legrand. But as with all techniques learnt, Legrand has adapted it to fit his Judo.
Legrand’s chosen grips are the sleeve, and a deep left arm over Uke’s back. He can attack off the standard sleeve and lapel grip. However, he finds it harder to close the distance and feels more at risk of a counter.
As with all good Judoka, Legrand could use his Kouchi in many different scenarios, not only like this. While he normally relied on the twitch, this didn’t stop him using Kouchi in multiple ways, even as a counter.
Next, Legrand will teach you everything; including the set up, skip across, and execution, along with an analysis of how he used it in competition.
