Here is an exercise Colin Oates uses to train weight transference.
By placing four cones to create the shape of a square in a two by two metre area, Oates demonstrates a very effective way of changing direction quickly and adjusting your body weight accordingly.
This ability to transfer your weight from one side of the body to the other is a key element in judo and this exercise is a great way to train alone, either in a dojo or at home.
If the space permits, the cones can be used in a triangular formation. In this way weight transference can be practised in a diagonal direction.
This type of movement and change of direction is perfect for Ashi waza training, but it’s also beneficial for all types of offensive and defensive judo.
Oates used these exercises to complement the movement patterns that set up all of his Tachi-waza.
