In this clip we look at the competition variations of Colin Oates’s Harai goshi and Uchi mata.

On his way to a 5th place at the 2011 World Championships, Colin Oates scores Yuko from an Uchi mata – Ashi guruma hybrid technique, against Moldova’s Soroca.

With a sleeve and back grip Oates uses the movement of Soroca to throw him.

At the Paris Grand Slam the following year, Oates defeats France’s Duprat in Golden Score with Harai goshi

Against Ukraine’s Khachatrian in Zagreb 2015, Oates works his grips until he has control of the back and then attacks with Uchi mata.

An off the sleeve variation of his Uchi mata can be seen here at the 2013 Rijeka Grand Prix against Belgium’s Lefevre.

Here’s a great example of the sleeve Uchi mata from the 2016 Samsun Grand Prix, with Oates up against Mongolia’s Munkhtar.

Notice the pin on Oates’s sleeve as he enters for the throw.

And, finally, on route to a bronze medal at the 2013 Rijeka Grand Prix, Oates uses his Uchi mata to set up a great piece of Newaza, against Spain’s Cases.

Oates, once again showing the value of that immediate transition from standing into groundwork.
